This brief is about exploring, researching and experimenting on intervening and interrupting a location using creative medias
the street artist Banksy came to mind for this project, well known for his controversial street art, which can be found all over the world. His artwork often protests and questions political ideals and problems within society. Although his work is permanent, which we have been advised to make sure our project is not, I think that it has a lot of relevance for this brief.
most of his work is done on public buildings which are visible by anyone walking by, therefore intervening and interrupting a location with great efficiency. Banksy is and has been one of the most famous street artists on the planet for some time. he has definitely made his mark.
the media of street art is something I'm keen on looking into further and possibly using it within my project. it's something that interests me and I have not really done before.
this sculpture is located on a main road in Bristol and is something I have personally seen many times having lived there all my life. I have always been intrigued and curious about the artwork. It's very eye-catching and hard to miss as it overlooks a very busy road in the city centre. the contrast in colour really makes it stand out from the derelict building.
The artist is unknown. however, many have compared the sculpture to the stencil work of Banksy. I think it's a very effective and impressive piece of artwork, considering the detail and delicate features as well as the use of contrast between the location and the sculpture.
I can't be sure as to the message it is representing, but my interpretation is that it's showing a mens suicidal statement where the bear is a reflection of the Childs youth encouraging the boy not to go through with it. especially, taking into account the positioning of the boy, dangling his legs over a ledge with his head in his hands.
what I'm taking away from this is, alike Banksy's work, is the choice of media and also the use of colour contrast. although, making my outcome non-permanent is something I need to think about and find a way around.
a lot of banksy's art are about very serious matters. however, they also have a satirical feel. I believe he uses satire to make a mockery out of his target whether that's a single person or a group of people. I like the idea of using satire as a tool within my project. how I go about doing that though, I have not decided. I think that will come through more research and experimentation.
I've struggled with beginning my experimentation with such an open brief and lack of direction. so I want to associate my project with something I'm interested in. I immediately thought to go to music, as it's something I'm passionate about. I've always wanted to work on and experiment with album covers, so I'm thinking about developing an outcome relating to a certain band or artist.
Coldplay is one of my favourite bands and I listen to their music all the time. I want to incorporate some imagery from one of their album covers into my project as I think it could be really cool.

I have been thinking about how banksy and the other street art conveys statements and messages within their art, but I think I would rather focus on the exploration of a new media and create something relating more to an album cover or at least music. this is because the idea of making something to do with what I'm interested In excites me.
I've been looking at various Coldplay albums and this one (a sky full of stars) caught my eye. I'm thinking that the wings could be used to make a stencil of some kind in my chosen location. I have not yet found or thought too much about the location I will be using, so that is what I'm going to look into next. I believe it's important I do this before going any further as it will give me a feel for what colours, tone and media choice I want to use.
